In fall 2009, Destination Development International called Antigonish “the gem of the Northumberland Shore”. Its downtown core is lit by decorative lamp posts and the streets are lined with trees and hanging flower baskets.

It’s a vibrant and active downtown with a great ratio of shops, restaurants, and services. There are great independent shops and bistros to get your morning coffee and a fresh breakfast, plenty of stores to browse including boutiques, gift shops, and art galleries. Visit Out and About Nova Scotia for a great art walk of downtown Antigonish.

Besides the stores, restaurants, and the art, there is Columbus Field. A great place to lay out and read a book, have a picnic, or take the kids to play in the water park and on the playground equipment. There are also tennis courts available for the public’s use. Every July Columbus Field is host to the Antigonish Highland Games and Music on Main; a free concert series.

At the east end of Main Street is the Antigonish Heritage Museum; a community museum that strives to preserve and promote a cultural understanding of the heritage of Antigonish. There is also the Antigonish Landing; 4.8 km of well maintained trails with views of the Antigonish harbour that are popular for walkers, joggers, and bikers.

Also on Main Street is the People’s Place Library which opened in May 2011. It’s not just a library, but a community gathering place. It includes the work of 16 local artisans, family/children and a youth area, as well as free wifi.

With all of these great attractions, plus patios to sit out on to enjoy a great meal and ice cream stands for an afternoon or evening snack, downtown Antigonish has something for everyone.
